It's really important for me to have a reach school to motivate myself to be the best that I can be. I chose UCLA as my reach school because getting accepted is already hard enough, but getting accepted for engineering is even more of a challenge, and one that I am willing to take on. The fact that their engineering program is competitive is a good sign, and UCLA holds a lot of prestige. Their campus is beautiful and just far away enough for me to leave San Diego and experience living somewhere new.

Cal Poly SLO has a great engineering program that will prepare me for a job in the professional world right when I graduate. Their location is stunning, very green and unlike San Diego. Living in a whole different place, with trees and greenery, and being able to explore it really excites me. It's far enough for me to grow independent and take care of myself, while still being able to drive home when I really need to. And because it is a state school, tuition is cheaper.

If you asked me a month ago if I was planning on applying to any schools in San Diego I would have told you, "Only UCSD, and that's a back up, just in case anything happens financially. I don't really like State." After internship, I have decided that I would rather pursue civil engineering than mechanical engineering. And I also met so many people who graduated from SDSU, who told me about their curriculum and the way their engineering program runs, which was very interesting. I learned that SDSU has one of the best engineering programs and they offer civil engineering, unlike UCSD! Now, SDSU is my San Diego school of choice, just in case moving out of San Diego is not feasible in a year's time.

I actually haven't been able to visit the UC Davis campus but I hear that it has a lot of trees and a change of scenery is what I'm looking for. They also offer civil engineering, which is a plus, and it's not in San Diego, which is a bonus! I like how I would be exploring a whole new area, because I've already been able to explore Los Angeles and San Francisco. Again, it's far enough for me to leave home and be independent, while at the same time close enough to drive back home when I really need to.

CSU Long Beach is another campus I haven't been able to visit but they do offer civil engineering. I like the idea of being near the beach, where I could study and calm down. I like how it isn't Los Angeles, so I wouldn't get as much traffic. The tuition is drastically cheaper compared to UC schools. And the distance from home is a little closer than I would like, but still enough to be away from home for a whole. I think this is a great safe school option for me to apply to.
