First semester of biology has been filled with learning lots about fish! Our project was designed to get us more familiar with fish for our main and big project that we have set up for second semester. We were assigned groups and were tasked to design an experiment to conduct on the fish or the chemicals/objects in our tank. We identified our independant, dependant and control variables and ran our experiments for two weeks. Along with this, each person in a group, was assigned a role (water quality analyst, animal behaviorist, publicist, materials engineer, and graphic designer). Our final product was a science poster that was presented at our exhibition at the Birch Aquarium!
For the first few weeks of school we went on many different field trips, some with organizations we are partnered with, and some we recieved a grant for.
At the San Diego Zoo, we went on a photo scavenger hunt where we saw giraffes and polar bears. Previously whenever I went to the zoo I would just look at the animals. The scavenger hunt encouraged me to read the signs and ask workers to learn more about the animals and plants on show.
When we visited the San Diego Safari Park we not only were able to do another scavenger hunt but we also participated in a lab where we tested the hormones in elephant's urine to see where they were in their reproductive cycle. I had a lot of fun micropipetting the urine in different liquids and watching the color of the urine change.
Our third field trip was at SeaWorld. The people at Rising Tide Conservation gave us a behind the scenes tour of the huge tanks and shared with us what they need to do for aquarium and tank maitenence. My favorite part of the field trip was getting to pet the sting rays at a part that is not open to the public.
Our final field trip was at the Birch Aquarium. We dissected a squid and saw many animals that we had never even heard of before. This was my favorite field trip by far because I really enjoyed browsing the tanks there. The Birch Aquarium sets ups their tanks in a very cool way and have unique animals, I highly suggest visiting at least once!
